about phlip arima

I was born and raised in Toronto, and have worked in the arts for more than 25 years. I've collaborated with visual artists, dancers and musicians, and, having performed more than 150 feature readings, am best known as a performance poet. In addition to being a former director of the Art Bar Poetry Series and co-organizer of The Basement reading series, I was one of the rotating hosts for the highly successful Syntactic Sundays reading series.

My first book of poetry, Beneath the Beauty was reprinted within a year and a half of publication and my poetry videos have aired on both Bravo and Vision Television. I self-produced an audio CD, The Inside Edge and one day hope to use it as the soundtrack for a series of videos.

My most recent book is Breathe Now. It's collection of 35 image-driven poems. Most of the poems are quite long and feature unique line-breaks that create ambiguities that allow multiple interpretations and levels of understanding. The shorter poems tend to be pithy and aphoristic.
